Jørgen Randers – Professor in Climate Strategy at BI Norwegian Business School & Co-Author of ‘The Limits to Growth’, ‘Earth for All’, ‘Limits and Beyond’ 50 years ago, ‘The Limits to Growth’ study warned about the risk of physical overshoot and global collapse. Since then, there has been continued physical growth into a physical overshoot which is most obvious in the climate sector. But there has not yet been global collapse from environmental reasons. The new ‘Earth for All’ study warns that unless the world implements 5 extraordinary turnarounds, there will be continuing decline in human wellbeing over the next 50 years because of rising warming and inequality, and local social collapse (societal breakdown) in vulnerable nations.

Dit is een samenvatting van 'De donut economie' (2017) van regisseur Alexander Oey. Hoera, de economie groeit weer! We zijn flink aan het shoppen geslagen na de stijging van onze koopkracht. Maar de CO2-uitstoot en de ongelijkheid stijgen helaas net zo hard. Wat is hier aan te doen? De Britse econoom Kate Raworth gebruikt een krachtig beeld voor een nieuwe circulaire economie: de donut. Onze economische activiteiten zouden niet uit de bocht moeten vliegen, maar groeien binnen grenzen, in een ideale cirkel. Staat ons economische gedrag in dienst van groei en winst of dient het de mens en planeet? Met die vraag ging econoom Kate Raworth, onderzoeker aan het ‘Environmental Change Institute’ in Oxford, aan de slag. In plaats van opgaande lijnen en stijgende grafieken ontstond een andersoortig ideaalbeeld: onze economie zou moeten functioneren volgens het model van de donut. Hoe dat precies in zijn werk gaat, beschreef Raworth in het boek ‘Doughnut Economics’, dat bij de kenners een ware cultstatus heeft bereikt. Raworths pleidooi voor de ‘donut economie’ trekt het credo dat economische groei voor duurzaamheid komt in twijfel: er zijn harde grenzen aan wat je de planeet nog kunt aandoen. Vanaf de start van je onderneming moet je circulair denken en handelen. Wie zó onderneemt, blijft bijvoorbeeld ónder het ecologisch plafond van maximaal 1,5 graden Celsius opwarming van de aarde en tegelijkertijd bóven een sociale ondergrens van het minimumloon voor werknemers. In de Tegenlicht special ‘The Rare Metals War’ waarschuwt Guillaume Pitron voor de schaduwkant van de energietransitie en digitalisering. Pitron is een Franse journalist en auteur van het boek The Rare Metals War: the dark side of clean energy and digital technologies. Zeldzame metalen zijn essentieel voor de productie van elektrische voertuigen, straaljagers, windturbines en zonnepanelen, maar ook voor onze smartphones, computers, tablets en andere alledaagse apparaten. Maar de meeste mensen weten eigenlijk heel weinig over de manier waarop ze worden gewonnen, of over de ecologische en geopolitieke kosten hiervan. Door ons los te maken van fossiele brandstoffen dreigt er een nieuwe afhankelijkheid te ontstaan. China is momenteel met afstand de grootste speler in de strijd om de grondstoffen van de toekomst. Europa en de Verenigde Staten zijn grotendeels afhankelijk van de aanvoer en verwerking van deze grondstoffen van China. En dat is gevaarlijk, want net als olie en gas kunnen grondstoffen ingezet worden als politiek wapen. De eerste voortekenen daarvan zijn al zichtbaar, met een hoofdrol voor het Brabantse bedrijf ASML. Om deze geopolitieke voorsprong te verkrijgen heeft China een groot deel van haar milieu moeten opofferen, want het mijnen en raffineren van deze grondstoffen is allesbehalve schoon. Kan Europa het anders doen en is deze afhankelijkheid nog te verminderen? Guillaume Pitron presenteert in deze Tegenlicht meerdere oplossingen. Specifically, I look at how overpopulation is leading to dangerous conclusions both on the right and the left. On the right, it's leading to conclusions of population control, murder, and ethnic cleansing. On the left, it manifests as birth control access, but is still couched in the ideas of population control. Overpopulation is ultimately a myth that at best distracts from the needed work of climate action, and at worst leads to violence. A group of academics and activists are questioning the possibility of endless economic growth on a finite planet and are advocating a bold solution: degrowth. Originating in France, the degrowth movement has spread to places like Japan, the UK and Barcelona, taking root in academia, grassroots organisations and among university students. The movement argues for a 'democratisation of the economy' and for collectively managing key resources, like housing. Critics argue that opposing economic growth is impractical and warn of negative consequences, especially for the most vulnerable. ‘Klimaatverandering trekt zich niets aan van politieke grenzen,’ vertelt Jeremy Rifkin. En daarom zullen we volgens de econoom en politiek adviseur niet alleen onze grenzen moeten herzien, we zullen ander buitenlandbeleid moeten voeren. In Rifkins toekomst laten we ons niet langer begrenzen door nationalistische of geopolitieke belangen, maar zal de wereld bestuurd worden vanuit bioregio’s. Niet zozeer omdat het een schitterend idee is of we het gewoon heel erg graag willen, maar omdat we geen andere keuze hebben. Maar met bioregio’s alleen zijn we er nog niet. Willen we het hoofd boven water houden, dan hebben we ook een nieuwe economie nodig. Een economie die vooruitgang en groei anders benadert dan nu. Een economie waarin het klimaat, en met name water, leidend is. We zijn afhankelijk van water, en toch nemen we het voor lief; slaan we nauwelijks acht op hoe we door klimaatverandering steeds vaker te maken hebben met recordhoge temperaturen, korte regenseizoenen en extreme droogte. Dat kan zo niet langer, stelt Rifkin. ‘We begrijpen niet dat water de oorzaak is van al het leven op deze planeet.’ En daarom zouden we planet earth morgen nog moeten omdopen tot planet aqua. In Tegenlicht-aflevering De strijd om planet aqua schetst hij een alternatief systeem waarin water voorrang krijgt. Rifkin denkt graag verder dan huidige technische en politieke beperkingen. Zijn idee is simpel (‘we moeten de naam van de aarde veranderen’), maar de gevolgen zijn groot, veelomvattend en complex – maar daar laat Rifkin zich allerminst door tegenhouden. En dat is maar goed ook. Want in moeilijke tijden hebben we stemmen nodig die alternatieven kunnen zien voor hoe we nu leven, die voorbij de ellendige status quo durven kijken, op zoek naar andere manieren van leven. Om al doende een fundament van hoop te leggen, dat wellicht het begin is van werkelijke verandering. Het betoog van Herman Wijffels gaat over de transitie die nodig is voor de mensheid om in harmonie met elkaar en met de planeet te leven. De menselijke ontwikkeling gebeurt in cycli, constateert hij, en het wordt pijnlijk duidelijk dat we op dit moment aan het einde van staan van een cyclus. Een nieuwe cyclus is niet vanzelfsprekendheid profijtelijk als we nu niet de juiste richting weten te kiezen. De oude organisatiemodellen, vaak piramidale structuren, passen niet meer. De industrialisatie zoals we die nog steeds kennen voldoet niet meer: het is lineair denken in een cyclische wereld. Daarbij hebben te grote groepen te weinig geprofiteerd van de welvaart van de afgelopen decennia. Niet alleen de macht maar ook het geld zit inmiddels bij enkelen terwijl de helft van de mensheid het moet doen met minder dan de kruimels. In grote lijnen gaat het natuurlijk om duurzaamheid. Niet alleen duurzaamheid in de relatie van mensen met hun omgeving, de natuur, de Aarde, maar ook duurzaamheid in de relaties van mensen onderling. Er is nu op alle vlakken onvoldoende ambitie om te komen tot een betere kwaliteit in relaties. Wat houdt ons tegen? In grote lijnen zijn dat op dit moment de globale menselijke systemen: geld, banken, politiek, grote bedrijven, religies. Oude piramidale constructies, constateert Wijffels. Wat nodig is, volgens Wijffels, is een volgende ‘release’ van bewustzijn. Het moet gaan om andere waarden voor ieder individu en voor de mensheid als geheel. Het moet gaan over levende materie in plaats van dode materie. Discussies moeten gaan over leiderschap als dienend model; over individueel leven wat je bent tegenover het huidige leven naar wat er van je verwacht wordt. De ondersteuning van de transitie zal een harmonieuze samenwerking moeten zijn van technologische ontwikkelingen, gestuurd door een verantwoord gebruik ervan, naast het duurzaam inzetten van onze gezamenlijke middelen. Heel belangrijk is uiteraard het energievraagstuk. Nieuwe vormen van decentrale energieopwekking zijn nodig. Maar steeds meer wordt ook water een probleem. Schoon drinkwater, een grondrecht voor iedere wereldburger, is geen vanzelfsprekendheid. Grondstoffen worden schaars gezien de manier waarop wij er mee omgaan. Technologische ontwikkelingen zien we gaan in de richting van miniaturisering en thuisproductie. We moeten daarbij ook serieus kijken naar het beperkende rol van patenten, tegenover het alles open source maken, willen we als mensheid de volgende stap kunnen maken. Wijffels ziet dat we midden in een transitie zitten. Niet iedereen ziet dat of wil dat zien maar we hebben feitelijk geen keus: wie wil mee en kan dat, wie niet? Wat is nodig voor verandering en wie zullen daarbij voorop lopen? Willen of kunnen we controle hebben over deze processen of geven we ze de ruimte? Een twee uur durend boeiend betoog van een belezen, bereisd en bevlogen mens over jou en mij en de wereld. In de Mensheid 2.0 is daar geen verschil meer tussen.

Lieven Scheire legt de kwantum mechanica uit

Carlo Rovelli is theoretisch natuurkundige en doet onder andere onderzoek naar complexe onderwerpen als kwantumzwaartekracht. Kwantummechanica is zijn grote liefde en daar komt ook zijn wereldbeeld uit voort, namelijk dat dé werkelijkheid niet bestaat. Dat komt, betoogt Rovelli, omdat de werkelijkheid die wij ervaren vooral ontstaat uit de interactie die we ermee hebben. De zoektocht naar dé waarheid is een tamelijk vergeefse. Wij creëren onze werkelijkheid zelf, zo bezien zijn er dus net zo veel werkelijkheden als er mensen rondlopen. De kennis die we vergaren zal dus altijd maar een fractie zijn van wat er is. Als we gaan inzien dat individuele, ondeelbare delen niet bestaan en alles om ons heen enkel betekenis krijgt door de relaties met andere dingen en gebeurtenissen, gaan we onszelf ook anders zien. Dat inzicht zette Rovelli zelf aan het denken over zijn verantwoordelijkheid als mens en wetenschapper, en brengt hem ertoe politiek activistisch te zijn. Zijn politiek activisme is verweven met zijn kennis van de kwantummechanica. De wereld is volgens die natuurkundige theorie dus relationeel, met andere woorden: de wereld wordt bepaald door wat wij doen en hoe wij ernaar kijken. Ons denken en handelen verandert de wereld. Zijn lezingen zijn regelmatig meer politiek dan natuurkundig van aard. In een lezing op de dag van de arbeid in 2023 uitte hij kritiek op de Italiaanse regering en riep de jeugd op om te protesteren voor Klimaat, vrede en gelijkheid. Tegelijk schrijft Rovelli populaire boeken als Het mysterie van de tijd en De werkelijkheid is niet wat ze lijkt, over onderwerpen die in de natuurkunde nog altijd hun raadsels niet volledig hebben prijsgegeven. Theoretisch natuurkundige Carlo Rovelli ziet tijd als een fenomeen dat we ervaren maar niet op zichzelf bestaat. Om het niet-bestaan van tijd te snappen moeten we niet vragen wát tijd is, maar hoe het te werk gaat. Zo kunnen we onze dagelijkse reis door de tijd op een andere manier begrijpen. Nauwkeurig de tijd meten schept bijzondere nieuwe mogelijkheden. Maar wat meten we dan precies, wat is tijd eigenlijk? Volgens Carlo Rovelli, natuurkundige en schrijver van boeken over bijzondere natuurkundige fenomenen, bestaat ‘de tijd’ helemaal niet. Het tijdsgevoel dat we ervaren in ons hoofd is relatief en hangt van de situatie af: als we moeten wachten is het anders en als we heel gelukkig of onder de invloed van narcose zijn ook. Vaak denken we: terwijl de tijd stroomt gebeuren er dingen. Een betere manier om ernaar te kijken is dat tijd zelf het gebeuren van dingen ís. Tijd is volgens Rovelli dus geen ding, maar een aaneenschakeling van onderliggende gebeurtenissen en interacties met de wereld. Die interacties zetten processen opgang in ons brein dat aan de hand daarvan herinneringen maakt. In de ogen van Carlo Rovelli is dit wat een ervaren verleden, het gevoel van heden en de vrijheid geeft om na te denken en te handelen in een mogelijke toekomst. Paul van Liempt in gesprek met hoogleraar transitiekunde Jan Rotmans over de systeemverandering die eraan zit te komen. "Als je de chaos niet omarmt en wegduwt, wordt het alleen maar erger.” We zitten middenin de coronacrisis. Van verschillende kanten klinken geluiden dat er nu grote maatschappelijke veranderingen zullen optreden. Rotmans is al jaren bezig met het onderzoeken van dé transities die ons te wachten staan, zoals op het gebied van klimaat en ongelijkheid. Hoe kijkt hij naar corona? “Wat je ziet als je het vanuit een transitiebril bekijkt: datgene wat al langer gaande was, de nieuwe herijking van overheid, markt en burgers, dat krijgt een versterking.” Rotmans onderscheidt twee ontwikkelingen. Enerzijds wordt nu versteld afgebroken wat al afbrak, anderzijds houdt de overheid nu zaken kunstmatig in stand. “Alle grote bedrijven trappen op de rem en de overheid gaat dat ook helpen.” Volgens Rotmans oefent men bijna autocratisch top-down macht uit. Tegelijkertijd ontstaan er allerlei burgerinitiatieven. “Je ziet maximale polarisatie tussen dat wat ontkiemt en al langer gaande is en een soort repressie in een poging dat te onderdrukken. Dat gaat dus niet werken, want uiteindelijk gaan die lange termijn krachten het winnen want die zijn dieper geworteld.” De samenwerking van onderop komt uiteindelijk krachtiger uit deze crisis. Dat kan volgens Rotmans niet anders, als je naar de ontwikkelingen op lange termijn kijkt. Dat wil evenwel niet zeggen dat de transities allemaal gemoedelijk en zonder pijn zullen verlopen. “Ik denk wel eens dat onderschat wordt dat die polarisatie echt tot rebellie leidt. Tot opstand, oproer. [..] Er zijn wel drie of vier thema’s die leiden tot opstanden.” Rotmans refereert onder meer aan klimaatverandering, migratie en sociale ongelijkheid. “Dat betekent maximale chaos en nog grotere repressieve krachten [van bovenaf]. En dán zal het leiden tot een definitieve keuze voor de transitie.” Een systeemwissel zal toch op de een of andere manier vormgegeven moeten worden. Dat vraagt om leiderschap. Rotmans: “Leiders worden niet geselecteerd op het leiderschap dat nu nodig is. [..] Je moet tegen de wind in durven te zeilen. Je moet juist bijna contra-intuïtieve beslissingen durven nemen.” Volgens Rotmans gaat het al fout bij kinderen. Op school word je beloond als je zo weinig mogelijk fouten maakt. “We gaan nu toe naar een onzekere samenleving. Je moet dus kinderen leren omgaan met onzekerheden. Niet met zekerheden, dat is quasi.” Dit gaat volgens Rotmans om het experimenteren, het leren dwars denken en risico’s durven nemen. Rotmans vertelt dat hij in de jaren ’90 nauwelijks serieus werd genomen, maar nu steeds meer mensen de grote patronen bestuderen. “Je ziet het allemaal samenkomen nu. De sociale-, economische-, democratische- en de klimaat en milieupatronen.” Het is volgens Rotmans onzinnig om deze domeinen los van elkaar te bestuderen, alsof er externaliteiten zijn.
